You can upscale by 2x, 3x or 4x in a single pass. A 4x pass turns a 1000 x 750 photo into 4000 x 3000 pixels. Going higher mostly adds file size and processing time, so it is rarely worth it.
The model rebuilds edge contrast and cleans up compression artifacts, so a soft photo comes out visibly crisper, especially on lines, text and hard edges. It cannot recover information the camera never captured, so a very low resolution source will look cleaner but not magically detailed.
