Formats are converted with the browser Canvas API. AVIF output is encoded by jSquash (@jsquash/avif) 2.1.1, which ships libavif compiled to WebAssembly, because canvas alone cannot encode AVIF.

Image conversion FAQ

Converting to PNG is lossless. Converting to JPEG, WebP or AVIF uses efficient compression; at the default quality the difference is barely visible while the file gets much smaller. AVIF is the most efficient of the three and is encoded in your browser by a WebAssembly build of libavif, which the page downloads on first use.
Yes. Transparent backgrounds are preserved when converting to PNG, WebP or AVIF. JPEG does not support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white.
As many as you like. There is no upload limit because nothing is uploaded. Very large batches are processed sequentially in your browser.
