Audio removal in detail

Remove the whole audio track

The export drops the audio stream completely, so the MP4 has no sound at all. That is the right choice when you plan to lay your own music, voiceover or subtitles over the footage.

Use case: adding new audio, silent background footage

Video stream is copied losslessly

Instead of decoding and encoding every frame, the tool copies the compressed video stream into the new MP4. The picture keeps the exact quality of the source, and a short clip is usually ready in seconds.

Use case: long clips, archiving, keeping the original quality

Straight to MP4 with faststart

The output is a standard MP4 with the faststart flag, which moves the index to the front of the file. Players and web pages can then start the video before the whole file has been read.

Use case: web upload, sharing, social posting

Works with phone footage

Clips recorded on a phone, a camera or a screen recorder can all be muted, as long as FFmpeg can read the file. Common MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV files work without a conversion step.

Use case: phone recordings, screen captures, camera clips

Mute video FAQ

No. The tool copies the video stream into the new MP4 without decoding it, so every frame stays byte for byte identical to the source, and only the audio track is dropped. If a source codec cannot be stored in MP4, the export falls back to a re-encode, and that path is labelled in the result panel.
No. This tool removes the entire audio track, so the whole clip ends up silent. If you need one section to stay quiet and the rest to keep its sound, trim the video into the parts you want first, mute the section that should be silent, then merge the pieces back together.
No. The export writes a new file with no audio track, and the removed sound cannot be rebuilt from it. Keep the original video until you are sure you no longer need the audio. The tool keeps nothing on a server, so there is no copy to recover from.
Never. FFmpeg runs inside your browser through WebAssembly, so the file never leaves your device. There is no upload, no server and no queue, and nothing is stored once you close the tab.
Some source codecs cannot be stored in an MP4 container as is, so a plain stream copy fails. With Remove the audio track selected, the tool then re-encodes the picture with H.264 at CRF 20 and says so in the result panel. With Keep video untouched selected, the export stops instead of re-encoding.
