Image compression FAQ

Typical savings are 60-90% depending on the source format. Photographic JPGs often shrink 70-85% when converted to WebP or AVIF without visible quality loss. AVIF is the most efficient option and is encoded in your browser by a WebAssembly build of libavif. Try the slider and compare side by side.
AVIF gives the smallest files, followed closely by WebP; both beat JPEG by a wide margin on photographs. AVIF is encoded in your browser by a WebAssembly build of libavif, so the first AVIF run downloads about 3.5 MB and takes a few seconds per image. If that download fails, the tool falls back to WebP and says so in the status line.

Yes. When PNG is selected as the output format, we run OxiPNG, a lossless Rust-based optimizer, directly in your browser. It recompresses the image without changing a single pixel, so PNG files can come out up to 35% smaller with identical quality.
Re-encoding is not always a win. Small screenshots, logos and flat graphics are already stored very efficiently as PNG, so a lossy re-encode can come out larger, and a JPEG that was compressed before gets bigger with every extra pass. When the output format matches your input and no resize is applied, the tool keeps your original automatically whenever it is the smaller file, so you never end up with a bloated result. If you converted to another format and the file grew, lower the quality slider or keep the original format.
